purple hearts

Cupid points, arrows spent
men pour lemminglike o'er the cliff as a waterfall
whilst Ivory Towers peer over gates shut
like a babe refusing bottled milk.
Adam slept. Jesus wept. We must step
headlong dashed upon the Rock.
Rib breaks. Spirit spake. Last Adam wakes.
Thus, we all shall new flesh take.

"Cupid points, arrows spent"
I once heard a story of how Alexander the Great was able to get a city to surrender simply by marching his men up a mountain in full view and commanding his faithful men to march off the cliff to their death. The city seeing how his men considered their lives at his disposal, decided it was pointless to fight back. So, Cupid here is such a commander, pointing men to march to their death for his cause. Having spent all his own arrows, decides to spend the lives of men instead.
